Long Beach-SGV Corridor Rapid Transit

The Transit Coalition is currently working on a potential rapid transit alternative to the proposed southern expansion and northern gap closure of the I-710, providing a fast connection between Long Beach, the Gateway Cities region and the San Gabriel Valley.

Such a project could bring more capacity to the corridor than investments on the I-710. Currently, however, there are some issues regarding the viability of such a transit line. For one, the mode-share for transit of the cities and census tracts along the I-710 is low, especially compared to the Wilshire corridor or the Hollywood area. Even as the Gateway Cities area has some of the most densely developed and friendliest to transit in the whole county, the I-710 corridor still has a fairly low mode share (lower than LA County's average). This could affect whether there would be light rail or bus rapid transit in this corridor.

As to light-rail on highways, TTC believes this is an unacceptable option from a transportation planning perspective. Stations on highways would have to be where it intersects with major streets (or areas with high transit usage, which induces transit connections). On highways, the stations tend to be under or over the highway, areas that make waiting for transit a cold and uninviting experience. Worse yet, the stations are usually not near any transit destinations such as shopping centers and office buildings; and even when they are fairly close by, access to them are neither pedestrian- nor bike-friendly.

An I-605 transit corridor is a better alternative than continued investment on the highway itself, but a transit corridor must be done in a way that is more conducive to higher ridership; and that is only possible when stations are accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Stations must also be built in a way where they complement the land-uses adjacent to the corridor - where they are built near transit-generators such as shopping/entertainment and employment destinations. A line along the I-605 would work best if built along Norwalk or Pioneer or Studebaker or Workman Mill or even Peck, instead of on the highway itself.
